For over a century, Sweida’s has served a wide variety of industries, including retail, events, education, tourism, zoos, performance and theatre companies, and beyond. Our legacy includes a commitment to craftsmanship, such as our renowned wig-making services, which were among the last of their kind in the country. Our custom-made wigs, including the beloved Deluxe Santa Wigs & Beards and dancers' hairpieces, were handmade to order until our recent relocation to 13 Jaybel Street.

A Brief Company History

Founded in 1912, Sweida's proudly marked its 100th anniversary in May 2012. The company began as a hairdressing business when Mr. Charles A. Schweida opened one of the first shops in the iconic Brisbane Arcade. Following in his footsteps, family members continued the trade until the outbreak of World War II. At that point, Charles’ son, Leo Schweida, and his wife Elva, a dancer, pivoted the business to specialize in wig-making and theatrical supplies.

After 50 years of successful operations in the Arcade, expanding into fancy dress, ballet, and dancewear, the Schweida family sold their stores. Leo and Elva, considering retirement, started a small "hobby" business in Annerley. What began as a modest venture quickly expanded, and the business was passed down to their daughter Christine. Along with her husband Jeff, Christine continued to grow the company, establishing it as a leading supplier of theatrical supplies, fancy dress, and costume accessories in Queensland.

With the introduction of modern operational methods and fresh ideas, the business experienced rapid growth, necessitating a relocation to Salisbury in 1996. Sadly, shortly after the move, the Schweida family suffered the loss of Leo, and more recently, Elva.

The next generation of the Schweida family, granddaughter Samantha, has now joined the business. With her enthusiasm and drive to keep the family legacy alive, she is dedicated to evolving the business to stay ahead of market trends, ensuring her grandparents’ vision continues.

As one of the last surviving, fully Queensland-owned and operated businesses after more than a century, Sweida's enjoys a strong reputation in the business community, respected by both customers and competitors alike.
